on Friday the 16th of March, i started an Anti-veHicular Bridging petition.

this was in response to the proposal [in the Esalen Master Plan] to put a "vehicular bridge" over the creek.  The purposes that i heard were: for golf carts to go over, and for emergency vehicles to go over.

i fear a great blooming of golf carts.  i know some staff members who when going from the Maintenance Shop to the Big House would rather go by car than by foot.  by foot, it is a beautiful direct walk through the canyon; by car, it is about 10 times farther, and involves going up to Highway 1 and back down a one lane road].

i do not want to dodge those great wide machines careening down the narrow paths going up and down the canyon walls. i do not want to hear the whine of their motors drowning out the peaceful burbling of the creek. i do not wish to breathe their brake dust.

on a big poster sheet, i wrote:

veHicular Bridge means more Vehicle driving,
more Parking, rePairing and 'Lectric bill paying.
We want more Walking, more Walk-walk-walk-Walking,
     more Walk-walk-walk-Walk-walk-walk-Walk-walk-walk-walking.

i signed it "Sir charles of Gazebo!" -- in full color -- for i had brought out my colored pencils. and a lot of other people signed it, in full color too.

i also brought it out on the Evening of Wednesday the 14th of March, and i added the more positive descriptive line:

    a pro-Walking pro-Knapsack pro-Rickshaw petition

Here's the upper left corner of the petition:

an Anti-veHicular Bridging petition

after the two evenings of petition signing, i met with some of the planners, and realized that we shared the goal of having more walking and less vehicle use, but they did not share my vision that we did not need the vehicular bridge. So i decided that the next step was to demonstrate that rickshaws could carry what we need to carry -- in an enjoyable way! So i am now building a rickshaw... Stay tuned...
