2 September 2003: Ireland

We are in a pub in the Northside of Dublin (north of the river Liffey). Ahhh....we're sitting on a beautiful embroidered sofa and have just finished a lunch of warm, filling mushroom soup, a small mixture of salads - which came to be because I tried to describe a simple lettuce salad with dressing and realized in Ireland, salad means mayonaise with vegetables. Of course we had a plate of thick fries served with mayonaise, ketchup and malt vinegar and a pint of Guinness with a big foamy head.

How wonderful to be sitting among the locals at lunchtime with no particular place to go. We travelled by express bus from the airport to Busaras . A thin man with orange-yellow hair somewhat ressembling Willie Wonka took us under his wing on the bus and warned us not to dally come nightfall in the Northside of Dublin. We are soooo tired, there's very little chance of that.
Here's my love...........
Our luggage is lost (or delayed), our flight was looooonnnnggg (three legs) with one cancelled flight for which we got reassigned. Yet it has all gone smoothly, and here we are in the land of Eire. The beer is good.

After the pub, we got a flyer on the street announcing a free performance of Shakespeare's "As You Like It" in St. Stephen's Green, which is a lovely park. The performance was magnificent! A fun, creative, and poetic mixture of:
The players enunciated beautifully, and were !understood! The plot involved a woman who loves a man... She dresses up as a man and becomes his servant. Unfortunately he loves another woman, and he orders his servant (the woman in disguise as a man) to bring his love messages to this other woman whom he loves. This woman in turn falls in love with the messenger (the woman in disguise as a man)... This knotty triangle of unrequited love is wound up tight, promising a great resolution... Unfortunately we had to leave early, before the play had ended... How does it end?!? i cannot wait to find out. |

Then at last we arrived at the home sweet home of Karen's two lovely friends Caitriona & Olive. They are wonderful people -- loads of fun! |

One day long ago, during the time when Ireland was suffering under British rule, the Queen died. An order went out that if you had a Georgian-style house, your door should be painted black. Soon a rainbow of colors sprouted upon the Georgian doors of Ireland, and they have been so ever since. The Irish have a proud and strong spirit. We raise two pints of Guinness to them! |
