Near my home, there is a meadow where I love to walk.
It is wild on a small scale -
all sorts of grasses and weeds grow,
but every so often someone mows the meadow with a big mower.
I have noticed trash in the meadow.
To me the trash is an eyesore except for the glass bottles, which are potentially
dangerous.
In the tall grass, the mower can't see much, and so the bottles get broken.
This broken glass can cut the feet and hands of children of all ages.
This morning, I saw a bottle,
and I picked it up to take it home to recycle it.
A neighbor saw me do this and told me how he had watched the meadow change over
the years.
The meadow once was home to vegetable gardens and cattle,
but after the housing development was built on the far side of the meadow,
trash appeared.
My neighbor said he has thrown trash back at the housing development.
I can see where this makes some sort of sense; in some way it sends a message.
But I believe that words may work better for this purpose.
So I resolved to put up a sign.
Here it is:

This meadow is not a trash can.
This planet is not a trash can. Please dispose of your trash properly. Thank you. |
